Blind Wise Man (A work in Progress):

A monologue sound performance in progress. Blind Wise Man is discussing disability, blindness and monstrosity, how liberal and neoliberal societies have established humanism through the demonization and/or the fetishization of the Other.

Lykourgos Porfyris is using critical disability theory and personal experiences in order to understand the differences and similarities between demonization and fetishization. What is the effect of those -izations on how others gaze our disabled bodies and how do we perceive our bodies through the ableist gaze? Last but not least I am rais- ing the “classic philosophical" question: Is the monster charming or disgusting? Could it be both?

The work is focusing on putting accessibility as a part of the artist’s practice rather than using it as an external module.

Blind Wise Man started during Porfyris’ residency at Onassis AIR in May/June 2024.
